How the Memorial Tournament helped reunite a pair of World War II veterans

Sent on Friday, December 20, 2013

Long before Muirfield Village Golf Club and the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance were even a glimmer in the eye of Jack Nicklaus, a seed was planted for an unlikely reunion between two World War II Navy veterans thanks to the Golden Bear’s top-rated PGA TOUR stop.

In 1945, the Second World War brought Jules Alexander and Joe Jurlina together. The pair were stationed in Guam and then in Tokyo as Naval aerial reconnaissance photographers. After the war, Alexander went on to become a professional photographer, celebrated for his work in golf. Fast forward to 2010 in Dublin, Ohio where Jurlina, now a Columbus resident, recognized Alexander’s name as one of the photographers featured in the official Magazine of the Memorial Tournament.

A telephone reunion followed and the two were able to reconnect 65 years later thanks in large part to the Memorial Tournament.
