Arnold Palmer (1929 - 2016)

Arnold Palmer, arguably the most popular and influential player in the history of golf, was memorialized on Oct. 4 near his hometown of Latrobe, Pa., after he died on Sunday, Sept. 25 at the age of 87 due to heart complications. The legendary player had been in failing health over the last two years, and he was awaiting cardiovascular surgery in Pittsburgh when he passed away.

A professional golfer for 12 years, William McGirt said he’d learned plenty and “gotten my nose bloodied a few times.” But in the 41st edition of Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, McGirt got his nose out front and kept it there.

And in the process he became the third straight playoff winner and the third straight first-time winner at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Shark Attack in 2017

Three major champions and one of the game’s top amateurs will be the latest additions enshrined in Memorial Park at the 2017 Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide.

The Captains Club announced June 5 during the final round of the Memorial Tournament that two-time Open Championship winner Greg Norman leads a class of four players as Tournament Honorees next year. Norman, 61, is the fourth past Memorial winner to become a Memorial Honoree.

A Great Ohioan

Memorial Tournament host and founder, Jack Nicklaus joined industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller and Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart as members of the 2016 class of Great Ohioans announced by the Capital Square Review and Advisory Board and Capital Square Foundation earlier this month.

The Great Ohioan Award commemorates Ohioans who have played a significant role in an event or series of events of lasting significance in World, American or Ohio history. Nicklaus is the sixth figure from the sports world to be so honored, joining Bill Willis and Paul Brown from football, Cy Young and Bob Feller from baseball, and Jesse Owens from track and field.
